Candles 12th Jun, 2025

A candle’s journey begins long before the wick is lit. It starts with intention—a purpose shaped by prayer, hope, or remembrance. Once lit, it becomes a companion in silence, its flame whispering truths words cannot express. Whether burning on an altar, resting in a child’s hand during a sacrament, or glowing quietly in a home corner, a candle holds meaning far beyond its form.

Each flicker mirrors the heartbeat of faith. It draws us in, centers our spirit, and lifts our soul. Candles bridge moments of time, faith, and sacred presence in ways no other object can.

“In him was life; and the life was the light of men. The light shone in the darkness, and the darkness has not overwhelmed it.” — John 1:4–5

From Genesis to the Gospels, light is central to the Christian story. It is God’s first act of creation, and Jesus’ enduring identity: “I am the light of the world.” A candle, though small, becomes a vessel of this symbolism. Each time it is lit in faith, it carries a divine echo—a sign that God’s presence still burns within and among us. More than a source of illumination, candles symbolize transformation: of wax into flame, and of soul into prayer.

The Story of the Candle — A Parable of Purpose

Praying hands

One evening, a man picked a small candle from a box and began ascending a long, winding staircase. “Where are we going?” asked the candle. “To light a great lamp for the ships at sea,” the man replied. “But I am too small,” the candle said. “Shine brightly,” he answered, “and leave the rest to me.” When they reached the top, he used the tiny flame to ignite the great beacon. Mirrors reflected the light far out to sea. This simple story reminds us: even the smallest flame, in the right hands, can guide many safely home.

These aren’t just rituals—they are stories told through wax and flame. Each candle is a chapter in the journey of Christian faith, marking beginnings, commitments, unions, and even departures. They light the way not just in sacred spaces, but in the hearts of those who carry them.

When Candles Speak Without Words

In stillness, candles say what words cannot. Their flames become our voice, our yearning, our thanks. No two candles burn alike—and that makes each one holy.

  • A light for someone we miss
  • A flame for peace and strength
  • A glow for gratitude
  • A sign of presence

Lighting a candle is an offering of the soul. Whether for remembrance, intercession, or simple peace, its light reaches heaven long after the flame fades. And in that gesture, faith finds its most beautiful form—silent, burning, unwavering.
